re Governors of Hawaii

[edit]

I'm bringing this up since, I want to know if it's sufficiently confusing to change: One does not have to be nominated to run for office. If Abercrombie had still stood in the election, it would read "lost election". But he chose not to run because he was not nominated; that's different. That's why the footnote is there. Otherwise, there's no functional difference between someone who lost a nomination, ran anyway, and was defeated (which would be "lost election") or someone, this case, who lost a nomination and chose not to continue to run. I also don't put "lost nomination" because, again, that's not a requirement to run for governor. This is how they left office - he didn't leave office because he lost the nomination, and he didn't lose an election, so he must have left office because he chose not to stand for re-election. --Golbez (talk) 05:55, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Golbez, thanks for explaining your edit. I understand the intent and the distinction you are making, but I am concerned that the current language is misleading and not understandable for an average reader. After all, a primary election is still an election. Further, in Hawaii, there is no mechanism for a candidate who loses a primary to continue to seek office in a general election--there aren't any write-ins under Hawaii law, and independent candidates are required to run in the primary election as an independent in order to be listed on a general election ballot.
I strongly suggest changing "not candidate for election" to something like, "lost primary election" or something similar, because stating that Abercrombie was "not a candidate for election" is not accurate. Thank you, Aoi (青い) (talk) 22:35, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent editing history at MV Astoria shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war; read about how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you do not violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Aoi (青い) (talk) 19:28, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If this is a shared IP address, and you did not make the edits referred to above, consider creating an account for yourself or logging in with an existing account so that you can avoid further irrelevant notices.

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Regarding User Mirrored7

[edit]

Hi! You asked me to let you know when I do this. I am about to make a complaint regarding User:Mirrored7 on Wikipedia:Neutral point of view/Noticeboard. The first step of the procedure is to "should already have tried to resolve the dispute on the article's talk page." Therefore, I have opened a discussion on the article talk page. If Mirrored does not comply, I can move on to making a complaint on the noticeboard. ℛonherry 11:56, 14 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the heads up! Though honestly, given the past stonewalling on the article talk page, I hope this isn't a futile effort. Aoi (青い) (talk) 00:03, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
I noticed, that you recently removed content from the Ariana Grande article. You must know, that I'm very open, and agree, that the top can look bloated sometimes. However, there's the User Ronherry, doing the same thing hours later, adding the word “prominent”, on the Taylor Swift top. And then he's the one saying, I'm doing “fanfiction and puffery”, opening a talk page, just to put everyone against me. I just get the feeling, that you don't see the whole picture. I and Ronherry, have a history together, and since then, it seems like a one-sided edit war. I'm open for changes, but then please, stay fair, because Ronherry is literally doing the same thing, he's accusing me of. It would be great if you can have a serious look at Ronherry's changes and revise his last change, like you did on the Ariana Grande page, just to stay objective and fair. Best regards. Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Another sock

[edit]

Thank you very much for reverting the socks of User: MaryJaydHicky. Unfortunately he's back with another sock named User: Doo wop hop. The situation seems to be pretty serious as he's creating new socks everyday vandalizing several pages. An extended page protection on those articles can be a solution to this? DollysOnMyMind (talk) 10:57, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DollysOnMyMind and Jules*: Thank you both for taking care of this. Extended page protection might be an option for certain articles, but administrators are understandably reluctant to EC-protect pages unless there's a *lot* of repeated disruption by auto-confirmed accounts. ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:05, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
